These hand-drawn design renderings, or illustrations, are valuable tools for designers to see their own designs come alive and to “sell” the design concepts to the clients and home owners.
For example, the designer Woody Argall asked for renderings because he was working on a project with home owners hesitant to proceed with his design for their remodeled spaces. The home owners said they were having trouble understanding the design from only plans and mood boards. However, he says the renderings, including the one below, helped him to “seal the deal,” selling his concept—the plans, the furniture and the finishes—to his clients.
Designers often prefer the warmth and romance of a loose hand-drawn design rendering, over computer generated models. CG models, such as Sketchup models, are of course useful, and they can be a valuable starting point for determining the desired view of a hand-drawn rendering.
